We work
with earth.
Grond works with raw earth for construction, renovation, art and design. With raw earth, we really mean raw earth: an unprocessed and unfired mix of clay, sand and gravel. No cement, concrete or chemicals are needed to make raw earth strong and durable.
Today the use of raw earth is slowly rediscovered and revalued due to its remarkable ecological, aesthetical and health characteristics, making the material an excellent alternative for contemporary construction and design.
The range of technical and architectural possibilities of raw earth is extremely large and varied. Raw earth can be compressed, stacked, extruded, poured, shaped,… 12 general techniques exist to use and apply raw earth.
WE WORK WITH HUMID EARTH
Rammed earth, Compressed Earth Blocks (CEB),...Extreme compression transforms loose, humid earth into a dense and strong structure. Compressed or rammed earth can be used for art and design elements and the construction of (load-bearing) walls and floors. A layer of approx. 16cm humid earth is compressed to a layer of approx. 9cm. Floors are treated with natural oils and wax for solid protection.
The qualities of rammed earth are remarkable: it is almost as strong as concrete, it is 100% natural, can be sourced locally and is reusable. Compared to other building materials, raw earth has an extremely low carbon footprint. On top of that, rammed earth creates a healthy environment as it doesn’t contain toxic additives, helps regulating acoustics and balances indoor temperatures,
WE WORK WITH LIQUID EARTH
Clay plaster, Wattle and daub, Liquid earth,...Clay plasters are applied to walls, ceilings or other structures in 2 to 4 layers on roughly any type of substrate. After application the mix is evened out with or without a specific decorative texture. The aesthetic options are limitless and can vary both in texture and colour.
Just like other raw earth materials, clay plasters create a healthy environment as they help to regulate inside temperatures and humidity. They also help to absorb noises and sounds. Clay plasters are fully recyclable, easily repairable and compostable. They are an ecological alternative to the regular lime and gypsum plasters as they don’t contain harmful chemicals and the fabrication doesn’t require energy-intensive processing.
Grond doesn’t work with a standard set of colours but mixes natural pigments into its clays, depending on the desired colour. The textures of the clay plaster vary from smooth to rough but are never silky and glossy. Grond applies clay plaster in standard finishing techniques but also develops special and highly decorative finishing techniques (sometimes even with funky additives such as shells, copper, ashes, pearls, algae etc).

Sponge technique
A standard application technique creating a nuanced surface. Depending on the type of clay, small grains of sand can be made visible which make a natural-looking surface with a bit of depth and texture.
